In Indonesia, English is considered a foreign language and a mandatory subject that has to be taught at schools. Especially at Vocational High School (VHS), neither current nor official records of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ proficiency levels exists in our national databases (Yusuf and Novita, 2020). It could be argued that many English teachers in Indonesian schools fall under the category of less-skilled professionals with the lack of adequate competences to teach the language (Renandya, Hamid, & Nurkanto, 2018). The participants of the study consisted of 30 VHSs EFL Teachers of Sumbawa. The data collected using TOEFL like test, and it was analyzed in thre steps; correcting the TOEFL score, converting it into CEFR level, and intepreting the data. The results of the study show that the English proficiency of the VHSs EFL teachers is range from A1 to B1 which the majority of the participating teachers’ language proficiency are still at the CEFR A2 level. Regarding the strong points, it shows that the participants perform better at listening comprehension compared to the other two sets of skills tested. Based on the analysis of their numbers of correct answers, SWE section seemed to be a weak point for nearly every participant.
Topan Rahmatul Iman Fatmawati Fatmawati Efan Yudha Winata Copyright (c) 2024 Topan Rahmatul Iman, Fatmawati Fatmawati, Efan Yudha Winata https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-01-15 2024-01-15 5 3 472 483 10.52208/klasikal.v5i3.977 ANALYSIS OF THE PROJECT BASED LEARNING LEARNING MODEL BY UTILIZING YOUTUBE MEDIA TO IMPROVE STUDENTS' SPEECH SKILLS AT SMP NEGERI 3 MERAUKE https://www.journalfkipuniversitasbosowa.org/index.php/klasikal/article/view/995
This research aims to analyze the project-based learning model (PjBL) using YouTube video media in student speech learning. It can be the learners themselves and their environment. Several students aim to achieve a high stage of proficiency in English, but various obstacles hinder their progress. Some positive and negative language attitudes affect students' achievement and performance in English. Negative language attitudes affect students' achievement and performance in English, such as feeling shy, lazy, or uninterested in practicing and using the language. In this journal the researcher would like to find and share how a Positive Language Attitude affects proficiency and performance in English. The researcher will use a qualitative approach to conduct a survey using questionnaires to collect the data and read through all the results of the questionnaires to draw some of the effects between positive language attitudes and motivation toward students' proficiency and performance in Learning English as a second language. There are 50 students from Pre-Elementary Class F at Universitas Klabat Manado which the researcher chose to be the participants. As a result, the students can increase their achievement and performance in English by having a positive language attitude and being highly motivated.
Engelina Salainti Copyright (c) 2023 Engelina Salainti https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2023-12-15 2023-12-15 5 3 526 535 10.52208/klasikal.v5i3.989 EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING IN MANDARIN LANGUAGE EDUCATION: A CASE STUDY https://www.journalfkipuniversitasbosowa.org/index.php/klasikal/article/view/1089
This research explores the transformative potential of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in Mandarin language education by presenting a comprehensive case study. The design is intended to determine the effectiveness of the STEM learning approach on student learning outcomes in Learning the Properties of Liquids. The average student learning outcomes before implementing the STEM Approach was 76.74, while the average student learning outcomes after implementing the STEM Approach was 86.09. This means that the learning outcomes of students using the STEM approach are better when compared to conventional methods. The difference in learning outcomes is significant, where the Sig. (2-tailed) 0.000 smaller than the sig level. 0.05. This means that the average value of student learning outcomes after implementing the STEM Approach compared to before implementing the STEM Approach is 86.09 > 76.74. The results of the hypothesis test show that the STEM approach is practical in the learning outcomes of class V students at the IKIP I Makassar Complex Public Elementary School. The level of effectiveness of using the STEM approach before and after learning can be seen from the average N-Gain Score of 0.4624 in the interval 0.3 ≤ g ≤ 0.7 in the medium category. The data for this research were collected through test and an interview. The researcher employed the test as an instrument to discover the students' ability to paraphrase academic writing texts. Meanwhile, interviews were conducted to reveal students' perceptions of paraphrasing in academic writing texts. The sample for the test were 31 students. All participants for the test must meet the following criteria: Participants must be currently enrolled as students in the English Study Program and must be registered in an academic writing class. The test given to students focuses on four aspects by Jordan (1999), namely paraphrasing by changing synonyms, verb forms, word classes, and synthesis. In the interview session, seven students were selected for the interview. They were selected based on their respective abilities. This was done to make the students' perceptions more varied. The results of the study showed that students' paraphrasing ability by replacing vocabulary with synonyms were in the excellent category with the percentages of 67.74% and paraphrasing ability by replacing verb forms (active and passive) were also in the excellent category with the percentages 48.38%. However, students' ability to paraphrase by replacing word classes were in the unsatisfactory category, with student percentages of 70.96% and students' ability to paraphrase by synthesizing sentences were also in the unsatisfactory category, with student percentages of 48.38%. In the terms of students’ perceptions of paraphrasing academic writing text, the study found that despite many challenges students face in paraphrasing academic writing texts such as students lack of vocabulary, grammatical problems, and difficulty understanding the text, students believe that by doing strategies such as reading widely, practicing regularly, and improving skills, as well as support from lecturers, students can improve their paraphrasing skills for the better
Faisal Ari Setiawan Amirullah Abduh Sultan Baa Copyright (c) 2023 Faisal Ari Setiawan, Amirullah Abduh, Sultan Baa https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2023-12-15 2023-12-15 5 3 607 629 10.52208/klasikal.v5i3.1099
